Individual and Group Counseling
Counseling Services
Newport Academy offers a variety of individual counseling, psycho-educational and process oriented experiential group counseling. Upon admission each resident will have an entire team of professionals committed to assisting with integration into the community, building a strong foundation in sobriety, and making Newport Academy a life changing experience.
Individual and Family Counseling
Upon admission each resident is assigned to a Recovery Coach, Primary Counselor, and Family Therapist.
Recovery Counseling
A Recovery Coach is a young woman who is herself in recovery. Recovery Coaches at Newport Academy are positive role models in the community with strong sobriety. They have been clean and sober from alcohol and drug abuse and/or in recovery from an eating disorder, for a minimum of 18 months. Recovery Coaches provide individual counseling related to recovery and the 12-Step program. They assist in obtaining a sponsor, completing the first three Steps, and all assignments related to recovery. Recovery Coaches are committed to their own sobriety and in helping others build a strong foundation of sobriety. They have a passion to share their experience, strength and hope with others. By working with a Recovery Coach, young people see that not only can sobriety be fun, but that others have successfully walked in their shoes so "I can do it too"!
Individual Therapy
A Primary Counselor is a licensed Marriage Family Therapist (MFT) or a Masters Level MFT Intern being supervised by a licensed MFT. The Primary Counselor meets with residents a minimum of once per week to assist with processing the underlying issues of addiction and changing core beliefs. Young people today face peer pressure, stressful relationships with their parents, and pressures to excel academically. They may feel guilty, lonely, depressed, and are looking for a way to feel differently, fit in or fill a void. The Primary Counselors are experienced in working with adolescents with addictive disorders in a holistic approach. They address why the adolescent turned to substance abuse and then build upon their strengths. Adolescents become empowered to change their identity from a "drug addict" or "alcoholic" to a sober young woman who is taking control of her future destiny!
Family Therapy
Family Therapy is provided by our Clinical Director who is a Licensed Marriage Family Therapist. Each resident receives a minimum of one family therapy session per week. Depending upon circumstances, sessions are scheduled in person on-site or over the phone. Family therapy is a necessary and mandatory part of our treatment program. Addiction is a family disease, with each family member playing some part in the addictive cycle. Through participation in our extensive family program, coupled with weekly individual family therapy sessions, healing can begin for the entire family. Recovery is a journey, however, it cannot be taken alone.
Group Therapy
A variety of 12-step based, psycho-educational and process oriented groups are offered on a daily basis.
All counseling services are performed by professionals who have an extensive background working with adolescents and are recognized as experts in their field. Many consultants who are associated with Newport Academy facilitate groups under the supervision of the Clinical Director. These consultants include Art Therapists, Authentic Movement/Dance Therapists, Music Therapists, Registered Dieticians, Clinical Nutritionists, Registered Nurses, Psychologists, Pediatricians, and Psychiatric Consultants. Residents begin their day by stating their daily goals to the group, and end their day with a daily inventory and accountability of whether they reached their goals.
Recovery groups are offered on a daily basis and include Recovery Education, Big Book and 12-Steps, Relapse Prevention, etc. These groups are facilitated by women with a strong stable sobriety who have undergone treatment and/or practice the 12-steps. Our Recovery Groups are not led by someone who will tell you what you should do, but rather by young women who have gone through many of the same situations. Group facilitators often entered treatment themselves in adolescence or young adulthood and are shining examples of what is possible in sobriety. In addition, residents attend 12-step meetings in the community throughout the week as well as on site 12-step meetings.
Specialty, psycho-educational and process oriented groups are offered on a daily basis. Topics will rotate on a regular basis and include: stress management, self-esteem, anger management, cognitive-behavioral, boundaries, healthy relationships, etc. Psycho-educational and specialty topic groups are facilitated by a Licensed or Licensed Eligible Marriage Family Therapist.
Nutritional classes and Cooking Demonstrations are offered every week by a Clinical Nutritionist, Integrative Nutritionist and/or Executive Chef. These classes not only provide knowledge of good nutrition and how to feed the body to reach optimal health, but assist young women in embracing cooking as a creative art as well as a much needed skill for the future.
Healthy Body Image group is offered by a Registered Dietician who specializes in working with young woman with eating disorders. This group is beneficial for all young women and will help break away the distorted perceptions of self-image and replace it with an empowered view of reality.
Creative expression groups offered include Music and Art as well as those that help to balance the body thru Authentic Movement, Tai Chi, Yoga, and Conditioning. All of our instructors are specialists in their fields and well known in the community.
In addition, field trips and outings are planned on a regular basis to expose our young women to the cultural and natural beauty that Southern California has to offer. Outings may include cultural and community events as well as team building excursions such as beach excursions, kayaking, and hiking.
