Education and Our Country

Parents can have tremendous influence on their children at a young age.

Parents can have tremendous influence on their children at a young age.

Millions of students across the nation sat and listened as the President of our nation spoke on September 8, 2009.  Whether you agree or disagree with the President of United States addressing the values of education to our youth isn’t the point.  The point was to ignite a spark in the students of America.  You see, the  students,  the ones that are feeling the direct pressures of school, the economy, the importance of testing, and many other changes occurring on a daily basis are not usually the ones who are spoken to, merely spoken about.

It is extremely important that parents educate their children with values and moral upbringings that are true to their own family and cultural beliefs.  Once the foundation is laid the children can hear any speech from any person and take out of it exactly what is intended.  If we all communicate our thoughts and feelings to and with our children it doesn’t matter who says what to our youth.

What I personally took from President Obama’s message was:   now is the time to reach within yourself and work for whatever goals you personally wish to attain.  There is nothing you can’t achieve if you put your mind to it.  These are powerful messages that we as parents, teachers, community members, friends, and family are constantly trying to convey.  Maybe hearing it from the President himself can be an inspiration to achieve for even one individual.  But even one individual is one more than before.

Want to be the “perfect” parent? Here’s what to say to your kids about drugs

Saturday, March 21st, 2009

Many parent hold off on talking to their kids about drugs and alcohol until they enter high school.  Middle school, they believe, is the last safe haven before entering into the big, bad world of high school.  Data trends regarding drug use in the United States suggests, however, that high school may be too late to have the talk and that middle school might not be the protective environment many parents think it is.

The time to start talking to your kids about drugs is NOW.  And if you have no idea what to say or do to help insure that they stay drug and alcohol-free, here are some tips from the experts:

  • Before you even start talking, set a good example.  Don’t use drugs or drink excessively.  Whether they admit it or not, kids follow the lead of their parents.
  • Invite more communication with your children. Tell your kids that they can ALWAYS come to you with questions about drug use.
  • Take the time to get to know your child’s friends and their parents.
  • Spell it out!  Let your kids know point blank that you do not approve of them drinking or using drugs because it is an unhealthy activity.
  • Be more involved in your kids’ extracurricular activities.
  • Always keep a close eye on any alcohol or prescription drugs you keep in the house.
  • Finally, tell your kids that you love them as much as possible.
