Dr. Jeffrey Fortuna is a Doctor of Public Health with advanced post-doctoral training in neurochemistry, pharmacology, and nutrition. His primary research interests and clinical background have focused on evaluating the efficacy of pharmacologic agents, diets, and supplements in the treatment of drug dependence. He has worked in the Addiction treatment field for the past 27 years.
Dr. Fortuna is on the faculty in the Department of Health Science at California State University, Fullerton where he teaches classes in Alcohol and Drug Studies, Health Behavior, and Nutrition. He has served as an educator for the past 37 years, including the past 23 years at Fullerton. He has also received numerous awards and has been honored as an outstanding faculty member.
As part of his post-doctoral training he served as a distinguished member of the Central Nervous Faculty for Bristol Myers Squibb for 7 years, where he received advanced training in neurochemistry as well as in the treatment of depression, anxiety, and drug dependence.
Among his accomplishments, Dr. Fortuna developed the nutritional guidelines for Hythiam, Inc. in Santa Monica, California. He has also served as a nutritional and drug education consultant to numerous corporations, over the past 27 years, including two major airlines.
In addition, he also authored a scientific rationale and protocol for Omega 3 fatty acids and Fish oil, which he regularly presents at conferences and during physician and other clinician trainings. He has authored numerous professional papers on nutrition and brain chemistry. He has also written two books on nutrition and brain chemistry, including: Food, Brain Chemistry and Behavior (1998) and Nutrition, Mental Performance and Brain Health that will be released in the summer, 2009. He has specific interests in the differential effects of carbohydrates and protein on mental performance as well as the utility and efficacy of Fish oil and Omega 3 in brain health.
