Teen Drug Rehab and Treatment

Where does a family turn when their child has a drug addiction or substance abuse problem? Teen Drug Rehab programs offer hope and healing for young people and their families who have seen their lives impacted by the specter of drugs and addiction. A professional teen drug rehab program not only helps get the individual clean and sober, but also teaches them the skills needed to stay drug-free and live life to the fullest once addiction treatment is complete.

Drug rehab centers for teens and adolescents are effective because they specifically speak to the issues that lead to addiction and substance abuse in young people. A teenage boy or girl who enters into treatment at an "adult facility" will not find focused counseling on peer pressure, academic pressure, self-image issues or other important topics that are covered in teen drug treatment. Simply put, teen drug addiction rehab professionals "speak the language" of young people - a fact that greatly enhances the recovery process.

There are three core components that make up the lion’s share of a teen drug rehab program: drug detox, counseling and aftercare. Drug detox helps the teen overcome the physical addiction to drugs by giving the body a chance to cleanse itself of harmful toxins. Teen addiction treatment counseling addresses the psychological component of drug dependence. This is where adolescents learn the root causes of their drug problem and develop the decision-making skills they need to live a clean and sober life. During aftercare, recovering addicts learn how to adapt to their daily lives in the weeks and months following drug rehab. These programs help provide accountability and structure during this challenging time.

Newport Academy offers both outpatient and residential teen drug rehabilitation programs to help meet the unique needs of every young person who enters through its doors. The result is stronger families and teens with everything to look forward to in the years following drug rehab.

Teen Alcohol Rehab

When a young person suffers from alcohol addiction, it can lead to a number of serious problems for themselves and their family. Teen alcohol rehab programs help these young people by providing treatment for the mind, body and spirit. Detox, counseling and aftercare address the physical and psychological components of alcoholism – and provide the tools young people need to get sober and stay that way well into adulthood.

Each of the elements of teen alcohol treatment addresses a different component of the condition. For example, alcohol detox is responsible for addressing the physical element of alcoholism. During detox, the teen ceases the intake of alcohol entirely so that the body is able to stabilize itself. During this process, the individual is likely to go through withdrawal, uncomfortable but non-life-threatening conditions that include depression, anxiety, sleeplessness, etc. It is important that the individual is under the care of alcohol detox professionals during this time so that relapse does not occur.

Once detoxification is complete, the individual is considered stable enough to begin alcohol counseling - the key element of any adolescent alcoholism rehab program. Counseling is where the root cause of teen alcoholism is addressed and young people learn how to make better decisions and respond more positively to the stressors that lead to drinking and reckless behavior.

In addition to alcohol detox and counseling, many teen alcohol treatment programs offer holistic care (such as yoga, meditation and nutritional counseling) to help enhance the mind, body and spirit of the recovering teen addict. Other alcohol rehab centers for teens offer educational opportunities that help boys and girls keep pace with their studies during alcoholism treatment.

Facts and Statistics about Teen Alcohol Abuse

The following information will help illustrate the seriousness of teenage drinking in the United States – and why it is more important than ever to help teens and adolescents find proper treatment.

  • 11% of 8th graders, 22% of 10th graders and 27% of all 12th graders in the United States reported engaging in binge drinking in the past year.
  • 50% of all high school seniors reported that they have drank alcohol in the past 30 days.
  • In 2002, the U.S. Government reported that 2.8 million binge drinkers were between the ages of 13 and 18.

Teen OxyContin Treatment

One of the fastest growing addiction problems in the United States, Teen OxyContin Addiction has already claimed the lives of thousands of young people and shows no signs of slowing down. Commonly teens are given OxyContin by a friend who assures them that because a doctor prescribes the drug, it is safer than illicit street drugs. Few are prepared however for the powerful high to follow and subsequently suffer from OxyContin addiction or overdose as a result. Teen OxyContin Treatment helps break the cycle of addiction to this powerful drug.

The best teen oxycontin treatment programs are those that speak to the age-specific issues surrounding teen drug addiction. Simply put, teens become addicted to prescription drugs such as OxyContin and Vicodin for reasons different than those of adults. Top reasons behind teen OxyContin abuse and addiction include:

  • Peer pressure
  • Academic pressure
  • Problems in the home environment
  • Coping with past physical or sexual abuse
  • Self-image issues

Teen OxyContin rehab counseling helps young people deal with these issues, and provides healthier alternatives to coping with stress and strife than turn to opiate abuse. The end goal of these teen addiction treatment programs is to have the adolescent leave stronger in mind and body - and be able to maintain their sobriety for many years to come.

At Newport Academy there is a strong emphasis on both the physical and psychological components of teen oxycontin addiction - as well as a focus on the family; helping them heal and rebuild a strong bond between children, parents and siblings that have been threatened by drug addiction.

Trauma

One of the most common, yet least discussed causes of teen addiction and substance abuse is trauma. Almost any traumatic event – from the death of a loved one to past sexual abuse – can cause a young person to seek refuge in drugs or alcohol. Kids are often unwilling to turn to adults (even close family members) for help – a fact that can push them further and further into the cycle of alcoholism or drug addiction.

Among the most serious trauma that impact the lives of teens are:

  • Divorce
  • Loss of a close relative (parent or sibling)
  • Past physical abuse
  • Past sexual abuse
  • Problems at home – including divorce
  • Bullying at the hands of classmates

Trauma leads to stress – and for many teens, this stress can bring about substance abuse as a means of self-medicating the discomfort they are experiencing. Understanding the connection between trauma and addiction, teen rehab professionals are able to use counseling and therapy to help the teenager come to terms with the traumatic event, and develop healthier life strategies for coping.

Equine

Equine Assisted Therapy

The special bond that is developed between a horse and an adolescent girl oftentimes leads to amazing healing and personal growth. Horses have a unique ability and sensitivity to the feelings and emotional distress of individuals. It is in the human-horse relational context that the horse reflects back to the adolescent what it is feeling from the adolescent. With Equine Assisted Therapy, there exists opportunities for the development of caring and nurturing behaviors because the adolescent is required to be in the here-and-now with the horse.

Teen Eating Disorder Treatment

Teenagers often suffer silently with their eating disorders. Given that shame and self-image issues often play a role in the development of teen eating disorders, this isolation leads to the problem getting worse and worse over time. Parents who are able to recognize the signs and symptoms of eating disorders in their children must utilize every tool at their disposal to help them get well.

First and foremost among these tools are teen eating disorder treatment programs. Eating disorder treatment facilities can not only help the teenager regain good physical health, but will also enhance mental well-being – specifically by addressing the environmental issues (peer pressure, problems at home, sexual abuse, physical abuse) that have led to the unwanted behavior.
